Holiday Health Tips: Keeping Your Kids’ Smile As White As Snow

Holiday Health Tips: Keeping Your Kids’ Smile As White As Snow

Tis the season of giving and that’s just what Santa does. Watching your kids smile as they unwrap their gifts warms your heart and brightens your day. Help keep it that way by keeping their teeth healthy!

Here’s ho-ho-how to take care of your children’s smiles during the holidays:

LIMIT SWEET TREATS

With an abundance of candy canes and sugar plums, hot cocoa and Christmas cookies, the holidays are a time to indulge (within reason). Encourage your youngsters to follow Rudolph’s lead and reach for the carrots instead.

Limiting the number of sugary snacks they eat is a great way to prevent eroded enamel and cavities. Be sure to get them to rinse their mouths or brush their teeth after eating to wash away the sugar.

ESTABLISH A ROUTINE

Cavities happen when bacteria and food are left on the teeth, softening the enamel until a hole forms. Parents can fight this by teaching healthy dental care habits early on. Set an example by brushing your teeth for at least two minutes twice a day.

Listening to a short tune or making your own teeth-brushing song can solidify this as part of a daily routine. We also recommend flossing regularly to keep food out of those hard to brush places.

DRINK LOTS OF FLUIDS

Building towering snowmen and winning snowball fights definitely warrants a steaming cup of hot cocoa but make sure they’re drinking lots of water too. Staying hydrated is one of the easiest ways to prevent cavities and protect enamel. Cheers!
